Poop talk

I hate to do this two days in a row, but I'm trolling for advice (fine, yes, and hits too) today over here. If y'all know anything about weird diaper rashes or want to weigh in on the insane idea I have of switching to cloth diapers at 20 months in, now is your big chance to opine.

I weighed in on this at your other site, but wanted to mention this cool program here too in case anyone missed it who doesn't read the other one.

You can get a bunch of really good quality cloth diapers to use for a 14 day trial period (brand new ones!). Go here http://www.jilliansdrawers.com/cdcm.html and if you hate it, you're only out $10+shipping for $100 worth of diapers.

Cloth diapering is totally not insane! It is merely easy and money-saving and healthy.

Your ass is especially smokin' today. Rrroowww.

Over on the other site I commented that I'd try a whole bunch of other things, including a return visit to Dr. McHottie, before trying cloth diapers as a rash cure. But that applies only if what you're talking about is a few-day changeover for the sake of the rash. If you're thinking about making a total permanant switch to cloth, I don't think that's crazy, and I'll add my voice to the others who say that cloth is not as tricky/gross as it seems to the uninitiated.

My boss (also a pharmacist) swears by Barriere cream. It's a silicone cream that provides a barrier (duh!) against wetness and allows the skin to heal on its own.

I've never used it for my kids. I tend to go for the Nystatin or Canesten once the Zincofax isn't working anymore.

There is a good option called G diapers. They have a web site and I use them for my daughter. They work really well and are a great cross between disposable and cloth.

ok i had to throw in my 2 cents. Our is only 4monthsish, but we've been battling diaper rash alot considering I trust the hubby to change her after I pass out and it rarely happens.

anyways...

we've settled on perpetually using Clotrimazole, hopefully it's not bad for her or anything, the pharmacist says it's ok. It's basically the over the counter version of Nystatin according to him. I read the using Summer's Lab triple paste would stop it from getting that bad, but then we can't convince the babysitter to use it since it's so thick.

Here are my belated $.02
We started with cloth with Noah, BUT after a few months surrendered to disposable because the cloth ones were actually giving him rash. He couldn't take the wetness or poopiness being that close to skin of ANY period of time. So night time or nap time was horrible.
Also...LAUNDRY went to a whole new level.
i LOVED

i LOVED how they felt and how they looked, and would have stuck it out if the doc hadn't suggested otherwise but once I took a step toward the dark side of disposable there was NO coming back

I cloth diaper and I don't think it is insane to switch. If you are only going to do it for five days though I would just try to find a cream that works for her.

I will be honest about the cloth diapers my first poop one I cried trying to clean it swore I was done. I bought some rice paper liners they catch the poop and can be flushed in the potty and you don't have to scrape anything off. LIFE SAVER. I don't use them anymore but when I started I did. Use all in ones and you just might like it enough to do it for more than 5 days. Get some bumgenius diapers they seem the most like disposable( I have not tried their all in ones just their pocket diapers) they also have a stay dry inner keeps the baby dry. Their pocket diapers I actually stuck my hand on it trying to feel if it was wet or not and yes it was but it didn't feel like it.

you can get the liners on the same site

Oh and I find with cloth diapers most have to be changed every 2-3 hours. Some people expect them to last for 4+ hours like a disposable. you can use your gerber prefolds to stuff in your diapers for nighttime diapering it may get you through longer or get a bumgenius pocket diaper and an extra insert and double stuff the thing for night.

You can email me if you want to ask any questions.

Good luck with whatever you decide

Maybe pull ups would work since they fit differently than a diaper. They're more like underwear without the stress. They probably wouldn't rub her thighs and they're fun to wear with all that princess crap.

her poor bum!
we did cloth for a year, and the only diaper rash bee ever got was after we switched. burt's bees diaper rash ointment did the trick. we're switching back for toilet training soon.

If a diaper rash is open for longer than a day or two it is consider a yea$t infection. Our pediatrician recommended a once daily application of Lotrimin Ointment(I know its for men), but it really worked and quick! I found the best time to apply was after night time bath ritual. Seriously...who'd have ever thought?!? Not me...

You might want to try Boudreaux's Butt Paste. I've got pals that swear by it, and it's sold at Walgreen's, Target, Wal-Mart etc. Check it out at http://www.buttpaste.com/ You can also get a free sample via their site.

two words.

BUTT PASTE.

It works.

My kids are grown, but all had a huge problem with the perfumes/scents in the disposable diapers. Rashes abounded. Try something not too smelly. (seriously) And definitely let the rash air out as much as possible until it clears...
