Pull up a couch

I have this recurring dream.

Wait, no, don't leave. Yes, I am going to tell you about it, but I promise I will do so in 60 words or less, and that's counting the really short words. And then we will play a game.

My dream is that I am trying to find a public restroom, but every one I try is either locked or filthy or flooded or full of spiders or has no doors on the stalls or something that makes it impossible for me to use it and I have to move on in search of another.

I have this dream a lot, have for years. Now, the game part. Your job is to psychoanalyze my dream, either seriously or with an eye to being as ridiculous and outrageous as possible, up to you. Whoever submits the best analysis wins the fabulous prize of coming over on August 11th and helping us move.

Hey, that's the same day we move. Does that mean you're not coming?

Hmmm.....I'm going to go for the Captain Obvious analysis and say that you must have a lot of excess waste stored up...no idea what kind, but whatever it is, you can't find a proper outlet to, ahem, relieve yourself of it. Or something.

nervousness about the prospect of potty training Mia ?as it relates to using public restrooms?

See, how I am afraid to win. I hate moving. I like drinking and burying PVS statues though. So here goes:

You have to pee, but you can't wake up enough to get to your bathroom.

Too boring? Fine. How about this?

The public restroom represents the government. The filth is the Department of Transportation, the sipders represents the C.I.A. and the locked doors represent A.T.F.

I have that same dream. Really.

Seriously, I think it is my (and your) body's way of telling me I have to wake up and go use the bathroom. Ridiculously, I'd say you were traumatized by an incident with a filthy bathroom as a child and are trying to overcome your long-held fear. It's why you hate cleaning bathrooms even to this day.

Maybe you're a "grass is always greener on the other side" type of person. So, no matter where you are or what you're doing, you always think that somewhere or something else is better. You're inability to be satisfied unconsciously manifests itself in dreams where public bathroom stalls are consistently not good enough.

Or maybe you're just insane. Either way, you're high maintenance.

Sorry, Beth. That'll be $150. Wipe off the couch before you leave.

Well, I can't imagine that you'll fly me from Texas to Virginia just to help you move. And really, it's rainy outside here, and we're all sort of in t his funk where all we want to do is go home and crawl in bed and watch lame TV movies all day, so I'm going to forgo the dream analysis. Well, except that I sort of think that it might tie in with the fact that you hate to clean the bathrooms, so maybe it's your subconscious telling you that you'll have to get over that or you'll have nowhere to pee. I thought the other day about you flushing the burp rag down the toilet. Funny how random, silly things like that just pop into your head. ANYWAY! August 11th is very, very soon, so that's very, very exciting!!!

I'm lazy so I'll only give you the lowdown on spiders (from http://www.dreammoods.com/dreamthemes/bugs.htm). For some reason, that was the part that jumped out at me.

"To see a spider in your dream, indicates that you are feeling like an outsider in some situation. Or that you may want to keep your distance and stay away from an alluring and tempting situation. The spider is also symbolic of feminine power. Alternatively, a spider may refer to a powerful force protecting you against your self-destructive behavior. If you kill a spider, it symbolizes misfortune and general bad luck.

"To see a spider spinning a web in your dream, signifies that you will be rewarded for your hard work. You will soon find yourself promoted in your job or recognized for your achievement in a difficult task. Spiders are a symbol of creativity due to the intricate webs they spin. On a negative note, spiders may indicate a feeling of being entangled or trapped in a sticky or clingy relationship. It represents some ensnaring and controlling force. You may feel that someone or some situation is sucking the life right out of you.

"To see a spider climbing up a wall in your dream, denotes that your desires will be soon be realized.

"To dream that you are bitten by a spider, represents a conflict with your mother or some dominant female figure in your life. The dream may be a metaphor for a devouring mother or the feminine power to possess and entrap. Perhaps you are feeling trapped by some relationship. "

I don't have an analysis to offer, but that very thing happened to me yesterday. I stopped at three different locations before I found a functioning bathroom with a door AND a lock. The fluorescent light above the stall was flickering malevolently, and "My Humps" was playing on their Muzak. It was terrible.

OMG, I have the same dream!! Except not only is the bathroom gross, and the stalls without doors, and the stall walls about knee high, but they are always unisex!! I read once that this dream is supposed to mean that you have a really good life full of excess (yuck) but I think I agree with Holmes that it means we have to much waste. However, I will admit that I was tramatized by filthy bathrooms as a kid. I went to girl scout camp. I was completely terrified that someone would reach up out of the latrine (sp?) and touch me. I guess I heard to many scary stories around the campfire.

Hmmm dream interpreter says

http://dreammoods.com/cgibin/dreambank.pl?method=exact&header=dreamid&search=bathroomdream4

"[see link]Both Jennifer's and Brady's dreams of needing to go to the bathroom, suggests that they need to let go of some relationship that has ran its course.

The notion that they dream of bathroom stalls, which are often found in public, further indicate that they are concerned about how others might feel and how others will perceive and judge them. They are feeling ashamed and fear that the situation might get messy should they make their feelings known. They don't want to cause trouble and as a result keep things inside.

Their emotions have been pent up for too long and hence the dreams recur until they are released or acknowledged."

---OR---

http://www.dreammoods.com/dreamdictionary/b.htm

"To dream that you are in the bathroom, relates to your instinctual urges. You may be experiencing some burdens/feelings and need to "relieve yourself". Alternatively, it may symbolize purification and self-renewal. You need to cleanse yourself, both emotionally and psychologically.

To dream that you are in a public restroom with no stalls, signifies your frustrations about getting enough privacy. It may also indicate that you are having difficulties letting go of old emotions. If you reveal these feelings, you are afraid that others around you will judge and criticize you.

To dream that you can not find the bathroom, signifies that you are have difficulties in releasing and expressing your emotions."

I think you are having some stress over the sale of the house or a real estate agent that you maybe need to ditch. Maybe it's the relationship with the house or a relative. You never call any more so I'm not sure what the issue is. Have Mia call me and let me know.

~Jef

I'll throw out an idea, though your prize really isn't all that tempting.

Public restrooms = other peoples' shit. And piss and blood and waste.

And you're going out looking for it- perhaps to contribute to the public wastepool or get rid of something in a public way, that a lot of people are also doing. But you're not leaving it/eliminating it, because you move on knowing that the environment is skeevy. So you still have something to release.

OR you're just looking to leave a pee and you instead encounter other peoples' shit and nastiness, which blocks you from releasing what you need to. So you need to find an alternate, HEALTHY way to release.

:)

I have that dream ALLL the time. I wrote about it a while ago, but I think one of the variations is having Condoleeza Rice IN MY STALL, peppering me with questions, and therefore making it impossible for me to pee. At times, it's a filthy, fetid restroom, and sometimes, it's that the toilet lids won't lift. For me, it almost always is my mind's way of stopping me from peeing in my sleep. Invariably, after having that dream, I'll wake up with a burning, desperate need to pee, and I'm thanking Jesus that the restroom was gross, just foul, because otherwise, I'd have peed the bed.

Hey, I have that same dream! It always means I have to wake up and pee. It's my brain's way of explaining to me why I am not peeing even though I clearly need to.

Notice I am not saying what YOUR dream means, only what MINE means. That's because I don't want to haul boxes.

Sorry, that was me rattling on about other peoples' shit etc...I cleaned all the cookies etc on my puter and it erased all my blog settings.

:)

in related news, the other day i was dreaming that i was helping you guys move. i think that means i'm in love with you and that we should all move to utah. no? okay. well, then i don't know.

I'd bet it has something to do with being a Mommy and never getting any privacy :)

You have a weird obsession with bathrooms, at least public ones. Didn't you post a while back about your rituals when using a public bathroom? I think it is your subconscious telling you to let it go...when you gotta go you gotta go...

Good luck with the move. Any nibbles on your house yet?

Dude. It's so obvious. You clearly have latent anger directed toward your parents, who made you eat your brussel sprouts with dinner.

I call them potty dreams and I've had them for years.

Mine don't involve spiders and such but they do find me running up and down the San Francisco hills in search of a public bathroom - any bathroom.

I usually wake up and realize what the problem is. I need a bathroom - now.

My potty dream is a little different. I'd be able to find the bathroom but I just couldn't pee. Which is probably a good thing...

Analysis: Drink less water before bed.

:)

It never, ever in a 100 million years occurred to me that other people have that dream too! I always wake up from those dreams to find myself with a very full bladder, so I do think it's a physiological thing.

I think the prize for the "best analysis" (not the most realistic analysis) should be that the person does NOT have to help you move. We should all have to earn our "get out of moving day" pass by being super clever for the next month!

Just wanted to say I love your hair cut, I know this is really late but I have been away from the internet for a while and am just catching up.

You have a lot going on in your life right now and maybe you can't find the right person or object to dump on because they're already up to their ears in their own s***.

So basically, your closest confidantes are dirty public toilets. But don't worry. You have the Internet to get all of your backed up waste out. It's like a nice, clean, fancy hotel bathroom. With no spiders.

I totally know what it means but I don't want to win.

As the mommy of a toddler, it's not like you get to use the toilet in privacy anyways... so why not make them inoperable in your dreams.

And even if this was a good analysis (hahahahahaha), you're on your own in the move.

Alrighty, I've got it:

You are trying to get something out (but no, nothing potty-ish). I'm thinking that you wish you could more clearly get your thoughts out there. Communicate a little more succinctly. But you're having a hard time "letting it out". Eh? Get it?

Or perhaps you really do just have to pee. What do I know?

Well, I don't know about your dream. But I think it's kind of freaky that last night I had a dream that you, Chris and Mia came to my work and had lunch there like it was a restaurant. Your table was set up all fancy like in the middle of our production area. We met - you were very nice. Even recognized who I was!
Now, THAT was weird. I'm sure it's all your fault, though, what with all this dream talk you put in my head yesterday. :)

No imagination I guess but, it means you have to go to the bathroom. Your mind knows it, but it can't wake up your body, and you end up dreaming about. You are lucky that you can't find a place to go (part of your mind knows you are still in bed), because if you do? Wet sheets.

My take:

You've got something to release (to tell, to act on, to decide, etc), but keep not doing it in an effort to wait for "the right time/circumstances".. and those never seem to come. Even if they do, the thing is sketchy/difficult enough that you convince yourself it's not right yet.

And I just moved, and since you and Chris didn't help ME move, you're on your own! :P

...that means your getting a urinary tract infection soon! ha~ ouch :(

You already promised me that prize, so do I get to pick another if I win?

Clearly, the dream is telling you that you crave some sort of change in your life - you're wanting to rebel against things that are normal (clean bathrooms) and journey into a darker part of your psyche, where things are more Trainspotting, but where you've been afraid to go because you might get metaphysically dirty. If you wanted to find a clean bathroom in your dreams (normalcy) you would have - instead you keep stumbling into places that scare you. I think that this move is acting out symbolically in your dreams - you're moving into some unknown space and you might be afraid that you won't find balance, but it's what you need - to be off balance for a little while. It will shake the dirt loose.

You are an old soul. The spiders are a symbol of the Spider Woman, who was the first of all creation and from whom all life comes. You, too, are a giver of life, but at this moment, you're bringing forth an entirely new life for your family, and for yourself. You are, in a sense, birthing a new world. This is frightening stuff and it's no wonder you're seeking to rebel against it, that you're stepping into scary territory in your dreams, all of this is for a unit (your family), and you might need some rebirthing of your own self before you are ready to handle this responsibility. Take some time to step outside of the safe place, while you're still physically there, to brainstorm about what it is that you've been secretly wanting to try, to do, to think: try doing that thing, thinking that thing, stepping out into the abyss and away from the normal. The Spider woman will catch you if you fall.

Sorry about that - I was posting from my feed reader and I didn't know it had actually started processing the comment, so I hit post again. Dur.

I'll use my psychic abilities for this. I am not responsible for what comes out -- check it:

Have you been feeling reclusive lately? You have this dream when you get quiet and just want to be in your own world. Friends call you, but you don't want to answer the phone or go out (but you do anyway). The public bathroom represents your public life. It's icky for you -- and it's not desirable.... You can't let go in public right now -- as much as you might like to?

I'm not responsible for this. And, it might be self-fulfilling for me. I'm so huge right now, I'm quite content hiding out at home till I give birth! But, can't -- monkey....

Hmmm, you still haven't found what you're looking for? I wish I was good at this dream analysis stuff. I used to have a recurring dream where I would loose control and drive off the road. I read that it meant that I felt that my life was out of control. Such a simplistic explanation, but it made sense.

OMG, I TOTALLY have that same dream! I'm walking around this huge, maze-like public restroom, looking for an empty stall. There is sewage/gross water on the floors, so I have to watch where I walk. The only stalls I can find that are unoccupied are completely backed up and disgusting, and DON'T HAVE DOORS. I really have to go, so my decision is this: do I use the stall that is backed up with no door or do I keep looking?

I'm so glad it's not just me.

Oh, man, I totally thought I was the only one having this dream. Invariably, it means I need to get up and pee. I guess it's my body's way of keeping from pissing the bed. Charming, no?

At the root, it's about stress and the busyness of your life. A bit deeper, it's about having a problem that you can not take action to solve. You have no control over the problem, and it's stressful and frustrating.

That being said... I'm glad you sold your house and I hope the dream goes away for a while.

According to Gustavus Hindman Miller, author of "10,000 Dreams Interpreted", 1988, "for a young woman to dream of a bathroom, foretells that her inclinations trend too much toward light pleasures and frivolities."

Congratulations on selling the house!!

I have that dream often too! Except usually when I really have to pee, so the entire dream is spent running around looking for a place to go. And then I wake up about to burst.
